Goals
The Pathways program at Andalas University strives to:

- Improve student academic and social support for marginalized students
- Improve the faculty and curriculum to increase cultural awareness and inclusiveness
- Develop mechanisms to improve educational opportunities for marginalized students
Target Population
Andalas University reached out to low-income and rural students with good academic performance (based on their TOEFL, GPA and motivation test) but poor English and Indonesian language skills.
Outcomes
To date, the institution's Pathways program has:
- Developed courses aimed at enhancing cultural awareness and inclusiveness through teaching methods and techniques, as well as new materials. The existing Language Training Center has become the new location for teacher trainings and student services to aid in this effort.
- Developed academic courses and programs for Pathways students. Andalas University's dean and language professors have launched a pilot program to improve written language skills and conduct smaller classes.
- Developed remedial and supplemental courses and groups. The Language Training Center has provided remedial Egnlish classes and houses student English clubs for the Pathways students and various university departments. The new program and additional services have increased students' TOEFL scores and led to three Pathways students winning a national award.
- Trained 62 faculty members to help marginalized students with their English language skills and 66 professors to help with Bahasa Indonesian writing. As a result, three lecturers have received foreign scholarships for a Master's Degree in Melbourne and Monash, Australia and one recieved a scholarship for "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" in Singapore.
