Goals
The Pathways program at the State Polytechnic of Ujung Pandang strived to:
- Increase the graduation rates of marginalized students
- Improve the curriculum and teaching instruction and practices to encourage greater inclusion and academic success for marginalized students
- Improve student supports in the area of Communicative Academic English and Academic Writing in Bahasa Indonesia, the two critical skills needed to allow students to receive scholarships and fellowships for further study
- Train faculty to improve teaching methodology and cultural awareness
Target Population
State Polytechnic of Ujung Pandang has reached out to students from low-income families throughout Indonesia.
Outcomes
The University's Pathways program:
- Improved courses to enhance academic success and the completion of student theses, which is a prerequisite for graduation. As a result of improved language courses and materials, the number of students completing their studies on time has increased by approximately 20% between 2005 and 2006.
- Developed additional activities, such as a weekly English group, to improve students' language skills.
- Trained faculty members to improve their teaching methods for marginalized students. Approximately 1,215 lecturers from various departments have received Pathways training on teaching methodology and skills and developing materials.
- Enhanced public awareness. The University's Language Center is now one of the most prominent centers in Makassar and provides a sustainable funding source for the University once Pathways funding expires.
