Goals
The Pathways program at the State University of Papua strived to:
- Increase the graduation rates of marginalized students by preparing them for the University's final compulsory examination
- Improve the curriculum and faculty training to increase cultural inclusiveness and success
- Develop mechanisms to improve educational opportunities for marginalized students
- Train marginalized students to serve as lecturers
Target Population
The State University of Papua has focused on low-income families and students living in remote areas with limited access to resources.
Outcomes
The State University of Papua's Pathways program has:
- Improved the curriculum and instruction to enhance the learning process and success of Pathways students. This new style has resulted in a greater motivation and participation level among the students.
- Developed a new set of materials to address marginalized students' educational needs in the culturally significant areas of Bahasa Indonesia and Communicative Academic English and Academic Writing. Based on a student needs analysis conducted by different departments, the program has developed a textbook better suited for students' educational needs. The program continues to revise the textbook based on feedback received from faculty using the book.
- Developed remedial or supplemental courses for Pathways students, resulting in a greater motivation level among the students.
- Trained graduating, low-income students in Academic Writing and hired them as young lecturers in the department.
