ABOUT INDIA As one of the world’s largest and most populous regions, the South Asian country of India is home to more than one billion people, 23 official languages, and several rich and diverse cultures. Despite India’s economic growth over the last decade, approximately 25% of its population remains in poverty and 40% remains illiterate. The country’s huge education system struggles to serve its massive and growing student population while grappling with limited funds. Only a small percentage of India’s students can currently access higher education institutions, due to high tuition cost, rural locations, or lack of preparation.
Pathways to Higher Education is working with institutions in India to extend opportunities to students from socially stigmatized and economically marginalized backgrounds. The Pathways program aspires to promote access and excellence in educational institutions in order to enhance quality and equity in India’s education system.
