ABOUT EGYPT  Bordering the Mediterranean and Red Seas on the northeastern coast of Africa, Egypt is embedded between desert and sea. The country, with nearly 70 million people, relies on its Nile Valley as the center of economic activity. Egypt’s government has only recently begun to recognize education as an important part of developing and sustaining a stronger economy. In 1995, two years after the government implemented a literacy campaign, the literacy rate was 51.4%. It has since risen only to 57.7% and the majority of the literate population is male.

Institutions throughout Egypt participate in the Pathways to Higher Education program. The program works to provide access to higher learning opportunities for disadvantaged students. Low-income students and those living in remote areas have more opportunity to learn valuable skills to better prepare them to contribute to the growing economy because of the program.
