ABOUT PHILIPPINES The cluster of islands that makes up the Philippines is part of the landscape of Southeast Asia. The archipelago, made up of 7,107 islands, is home to about 90 million people, making it the 12th most populous country in the world. Having been under Colonial rule for three centuries, there is much influence from the West visible in the culture of the Philippines, from the official language of English (Filipino is also the official language) to Roman Catholicism as the dominant religion. Education is another area where the Western ideal is evident, as the literacy rate stands at an impressive 92.6%, but like the country’s uneven distribution of wealth, education has lacked equity in accessibility.
The Pathways to Higher Education programs in the Philippines aim to provide quality education to more students from remote or poor areas. Through Pathways, the Philippines hopes to combat its economic imbalances by making education accessible to more students.
